Background of the Study
Religious tourism refers to travel undertaken for religious purposes, which can include pilgrimage, visits to religious sites, and participation in religious events. In Nigeria, religious tourism plays a significant role in the hospitality industry, especially in states with religious landmarks or places of worship. Niger State, located in central Nigeria, is home to several important religious sites, including historical mosques, churches, and other pilgrimage destinations, making it a key player in religious tourism in the country.
Religious tourism in Niger State has the potential to contribute significantly to the local economy, especially the hospitality industry. The state’s historical and religious landmarks attract both local and international visitors, particularly during major religious events such as Eid, Christmas, and Christian pilgrimages. The influx of tourists during these periods boosts the demand for hospitality services, including hotels, restaurants, transport, and other related services. However, while Niger State’s religious tourism potential is significant, it remains underexploited, primarily due to challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, poor coordination of religious events, and limited marketing efforts.
This study aims to examine the impact of religious tourism on the hospitality industry in Niger State, analyzing its contributions to the local economy, and identifying ways in which the state can improve its hospitality sector by capitalizing on its religious tourism potential.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of religious tourism to enhance the hospitality industry in Niger State, several challenges hinder its growth. These include inadequate infrastructure, limited promotion of religious tourism, and insufficient collaboration between religious organizations and hospitality service providers. Consequently, the hospitality industry has not fully benefited from the religious tourism influx, and many potential opportunities for economic development remain untapped. This study seeks to examine the impact of religious tourism on the hospitality industry in Niger State and explore strategies for harnessing its full potential.
